Figures above are reference rates and can differ slightly from what settles on a given call. Every response carries a price object with the exact amount billed — treat that as authoritative rather than this table.
Per-token model calls carry no platform margin — you pay the upstream's own rate. Media generation and metered services (search, market data) carry a margin, reflected in the figures above.
How the two payment paths bill
The same call can cost different amounts depending on how you pay for it, and the difference is not a markup — it is when the price is decided.
| API key | Direct x402 (PAYMENT-SIGNATURE) | |
|---|---|---|
| Price decided | After the call, from real token usage | Before the call, as an estimate |
Unused max_tokens | Not charged | Charged — no refund |
| Prompt-cache discount | Applied | Not applied |
| Minimum per call | — | $0.001 (settlement cost) |
| Needs | Account + funded HD wallet | Just a keypair |
With an API key, the platform runs the payment for you and bills what the call actually cost, the way a normal metered API does.
With direct x402 you sign a payment authorization before the model runs, and under the protocol's exact scheme the amount you signed is the amount that settles. There is no post-hoc reconciliation: if the reply is shorter than your max_tokens allowed for, the difference stays with us.
Set max_tokens to what you need on the direct x402 path
This is the biggest avoidable cost on that path. A 4096-token ceiling on a reply that returns 40 tokens is quoted near the ceiling and settles there.
